2014 UDIA Victoria Awards for Excellence

MAB Corporation, Lend Lease, Stockland, Sunland Group and Little Projects were among the winners of the 2014 Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) Victoria Awards for Excellence, which aim to recognise entrants for their standout commitment to excellence.

The five companies have now been nominated for the UDIA National Awards, which will be judged in February and announced in March 2015. Other winners announced at the gala event in December included ROTHELOWMAN (Consultant Award) and Interlandi Mantesso Architects and JMC Group for their Willow Park development in Maidstone (Judges Award).

Mark Bartley, Chairman of the Judges and partner at law firm HWL Ebsworth was joined by returning judges Mike Brickell, who is an architect, town planner and developer; Kathy Mitchell, Chief Panel Member of Planning Panels Victoria (PPV) and Past President and a Fellow of the Victoria Planning and Environmental Law Association (VPELA), and; Bernard McNamara, principal of BMDA Development Advisory.


Masterplanned Development (Winner)

Mernda Villages, Mernda - Stockland

Located approximately 27 kilometres north of Melbourne's CBD, Mernda Villages includes around 1,800 housing lots, a town centre and more than 70 hectares of open space.

High Density Development (Joint Winners)

The Quays, Docklands - MAB Corporation

Located at 245 Harbour Esplanade, Docklands, the multi-award winning The Quays was developed by MAB Corporation and designed by McBride Charles Ryan. The mixed-use development, which was completed in December 2013, features 617 apartments and retail spaces, including The Sebel serviced apartments.

ILK, South Yarra - Little Projects 

Located at 227-229 Toorak Road, South Yarra, and near the intersection of Chapel Street, ILK was completed in October 2013 and features 388 apartments. It was designed by Cox Architecture and constructed by Hickory Group.

Medium Density Development (Winner)

Chancellor Residences, Bundoora - Sunland Group

Located at University Hill, Bundoora, Sunland Group's Chancellor Residences promise to provide "private sanctuaries of comfort and style". The development includes 58 three-bedroom plus study homes close to RMIT and Latrobe universities and the University Hill town square.

Urban Renewal (Winner)

Tip Top, Brunswick East - Little Projects

Little Projects worked with project architects ROTHELOWMAN to deliver a development that seeks to pay homage to the site's previous use by Northern Bakeries and later Tip Top Bakeries. Completed in July 2014, the development includes 411 apartments and townhouses.

Environmental Excellence

Urban Wetland and Cascades at Caroline Springs - Lend Lease

These wetlands are an innovative storm water treatment solution for higher density urban environments that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Judges' Award

Willow Park, Maidstone - Interlandi Mantesso Architects and JMC

Developed by Interlandi Mantesso Architects and JMC, the Willow Park project has taken an industrial area and turned it into a new community.

Landscape Award

Chancellor Residences, Bundoora - Sunland Group

The significant landscaping within the site provides tree canopies and considerable internal streetscape amenity to this development by Sunland Group.
