THE West Australian Government last week said the $80 million Aubin Grove rail project has reached an important milestone, with the release of a tender for the new $57 million Aubin Grove Station that will be located between Kwinana and Cockburn Central stations on the Mandurah line.
The station is proposed to be located at the intersection of Russell/Gibbs Roads and the Kwinana Freeway south of Cockburn Central, and with approximately 2,000 car parking bays, it will be largest capacity park and ride station on Perth's passenger rail network.
The station is expected to act as a major multi-modal interchange and provide facilities for pedestrian and cycle access, local bus service interchanges, kiss and ride and park and ride passengers.
Construction of the station will begin in 2015 and is due to be completed by late 2016. A key aspect of the project is the requirement to ensure both rail passenger services and the Freeway remain operational during the construction stage.
Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the Public Transport Authority recently completed the purchase of the land on which it will build the new station.
"This key piece of public transport infrastructure reflects the massive population growth in the area, with more than 3,900 boardings expected at the station on an average weekday," Mr Nalder said.
"The total budget for this project also includes $23 million for the purchase of two new three-car trains.
"We expect the convenience of the new station will make public transport an even more attractive option for people living in southern suburbs like Aubin Grove, Atwell, Hammond Park, Mandogalup and Wandi."
Key features of the new station will include:
- A multi-modal station with approximately 2,000 parking bays;
- Six buses providing feeder services into Cockburn and Aubin Grove stations;
- Bicycle facilities and connections to local paths;
- Two three-railcar trains acquired to accommodate the extra passengers; and
- Passenger amenities, including toilets, lifts, stairs and escalators.
