THE Victorian Government last week said that passengers will soon find it easier to move between trains and trams at South Yarra Station, with funding announced for a multimillion dollar upgrade of the interchange.
The Victorian Budget 2018-19 will provide $12.33 million for a wider entrance at South Yarra Station and fully accessible tram stops – the first stage of a new South Yarra station precinct.
With patronage at the station growing, the works will widen the station entrance on Toorak Road and redesign the station layout to provide a larger, more efficient and accessible space for passengers.
The tram stops opposite the station will be upgraded to enable people with a disability to move between the tram stop and the station safely, sheltered from the wind and rain.
Ongoing planning work will investigate options to deliver a fully accessible station, additional station access points, improved cycling facilities, and better integration with the surrounding community over the longer term.
The government said it would consult with the City of Stonnington, local businesses and residents about the design of the train station and tram stop upgrades, and the long-term development options at the station, to deliver the best solution for the community.
Project planning will start immediately, with works expected to start in mid-2019 and be completed by the end of 2019.
