THE Victorian Government has unveiled the final eight locations of its 20 Supercare Pharmacies, which are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and provide round-the-clock access to pharmacists for advice, supply of medicines and dispensing prescriptions.
The eight new Supercare Pharmacies are due to open by June 2018 and will join the 12 Supercare Pharmacies already in operation at Ascot Vale, Ballarat, Balwyn, Bendigo, Coburg, Craigieburn, Curlewis, Parkmore, Reservoir, Traralgon, Wantirna South and Yarraville.
The new Supercare Pharmacies will be located at HealthSmart in the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Parkville and at seven Chemist Warehouse pharmacies at Cranbourne North, Hoppers Crossing, Keilor East, Melton, Mildura, Ringwood and Shepparton.
A free on-site nurse service operates daily at Supercare Pharmacies from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm and provides face-to-face health advice and treatment for minor injuries or illness, wound management, flu and whooping cough immunisations, health screening, sexual advice and referrals to other services.
According to the government, there have been more than 81,000 visits to Supercare Pharmacies between 10pm and 7am. There have also been more than 5,000 episodes of care provided by nursing staff. Around 30 per cent of Supercare Pharmacy visitors would have gone to hospital if the pharmacy or nursing service had not been available.
"Our hospital emergency departments have been under pressure this flu season. Supercare Pharmacies have made a real difference, providing another option for families, and helping to ease the load, late at night," Health Minister Jill Hennessy said.
"With another eight on board, we have delivered on our election promise to open 20 Supercare Pharmacies, with six in regional Victoria."
