VICTORIAN Planning Minister Richard Wynne and Water Minister Lisa Neville last week released the Protecting the Yarra River (Birrarung) Discussion Paper to generate discussion on how to best protect the Yarra for generations to come.
The discussion paper has been prepared by the Yarra River Protection Ministerial Advisory Committee, chaired by Chris Chesterfield, appointed in December 2015.
The Committee will provide independent advice to government by the end of 2016 on governance reforms regarding three key aspects of the Yarra River:
- Waterway health (stream, riverbanks and vegetation);
- Community use, access and amenity of the river and its network of parklands and open spaces; and
- Interface of the river with adjacent land uses and its catchment.
The State Government will work to protect the Yarra by introducing legislation, stronger planning controls and a Trust to ensure the river is protected.
The discussion paper is open for public comment until Friday 5 August 2016. More information is available from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning website at <http://haveyoursay.delwp.vic.gov.au/protecting-the-yarra-river>.
