Victorian Government approves new towers for Queen Street and King Street

VICTORIAN Planning Minister Richard Wynne last week approved a $750 million two-tower development on Queen Street and a $130 million, 62-storey tower on King Street.

The two 79-storey towers at 350 Queen Street will include almost 1,600 apartments, 8,000 square metres of office and retail space, 554 car spaces, 603 bike spaces, a new childcare centre, a gym and a supermarket.

The development includes a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments, reflecting the growing demand for larger inner-city places to accommodate families.

The approval includes a condition for both buildings to be set back at least 4.5 metres from the street.

The project will be delivered in two stages to reduce the impact on the surrounding streets and footpaths during construction.

"This is a well-designed development that will provide new apartments for our growing city as well as new services to support that population," Mr Wynne said.

"Good design that responds to the streetscape and provides for good amenity is critical and I'm pleased to clear the way for this project to proceed."

At 295-305 King Street, the Minister has approved a $130 million, 62-storey tower that will include 431 apartments.

The proposal for the King Street site was submitted before Mr Wynne introduced interim planning controls in 2015, meaning the application had to be considered under the rules that applied when it was made.

Despite this, Mr Wynne said that he and his Department sought to work with the developer in order to come to an agreement following concerns the original proposal would overwhelm the site.
