Adelaide City Council commits to Victoria Square/Tarndanyangga Masterplan
In the News - South Australia

ADELAIDE City Council said it remains committed to rejuvenating Victoria Square/Tarndanyangga and called for community feedback as part of its 2012-13 draft Business Plan and Budget process.

The plan for Victoria Square, released last week, shows how the full vision can begin through Council's proposed $20 million funding for the initial Victoria Square Masterplan works.

"Council has made a considerable commitment to the regeneration of Victoria Square," Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.

"There will be key phases in the redevelopment, as there are in all major projects, but we shouldn't underestimate the importance of getting started," Cr Yarwood said.

The Council is proposing an allocation of $11.5 million in 2012-13 and a further $8.5 million in 2013-14, with construction starting as early as next year.

"If the project funding is endorsed, we will start to see the Square become an accessible, lively and people-focused space for the whole city to enjoy," Cr Yarwood said.

The Masterplan includes a number of elements such as a gentle-sloping lawn area to accommodate major events and recreational activities, with seating terraces, shaded walkways, landscaping and a water play feature.

The edges of the Square will be improved, creating a shared space for pedestrians and vehicles, space for outdoor dining and other activation opportunities such as mobile food vendors, while a central plaza between Grote and Wakefield Streets could be closed during major events.

"Other features of the full Masterplan, including a tram line and road reconfiguration, the arbours, and southern garden will be considered as further funding becomes available – it's a matter of when, not if," the Lord Mayor said.

"Major city projects of this size and scale are often funded and delivered in stages, such as the redevelopment of North Terrace and the planned Rundle Mall upgrade. It's a common approach and will enable the community to enjoy the Square as it goes through step-by-step changes."

Councillor Natasha Malani called on the community to consider the plan and provide feedback on the draft budget to the Council.
