Contract awarded for part of North Brisbane Bikeway project

A CONTRACT has been awarded for a new 500-metre off-road bikeway that will fill in a missing link between Gilchrist Avenue at Victoria Park, Herston, and the RNA Showground's Gate 6 at Bowen Hills, with Doval Constructions to build the $2 million bikeway.

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson announced on the weekend that Doval Constructions will deliver Stage 1A – Section 1 of the North Brisbane Bikeway, which will eventually link Brisbane's CBD to the northern suburbs.

Works to deliver Stage 1A – Section 1 are due to commence soon, with completion expected in mid-2015. Planning is still under way on Stage 1A – Section 2, which will continue from Gate 6 of the RNA Showgrounds to O'Connell Terrace, Bowen Hills.

Designs are also being prepared for a further stage, known as Stage 1B, which involves an 865-metre pathway from Federation Street, Bowen Hills, to Somerset Street, Windsor. This project will upgrade an existing narrow pathway that follows the alignment of Enoggera Creek, with a new connection at Somerset Street, Windsor.

"We have a strong plan to invest in cycle infrastructure delivering a safe, more direct and connected route for recreational cyclists enjoying a day out with their family at the local park, to more regular riders commuting to work," Mr Emerson said.

Member for Brisbane Central Robert Cavallucci said once complete, the North Brisbane Bikeway would mean cyclists can travel off-road from Brisbane CBD to Chermside.

"We know more people are encouraged to 'get on their bike' and ride on cycle paths because they feel safer," Mr Cavallucci said, adding that once the entire bikeway is finished, up to 5,000 cyclists per day are expected to make use of the route.

Bicycle Queensland CEO Ben Wilson described the announcement as brilliant news for Brisbane cyclists and a much-needed investment in the city's bicycle infrastructure. Mr Wilson said the provision of off-road, direct cycle paths will help encourage more people to take up cycling.

In addition to the North Brisbane Bikeway, design work is also under way on a Moggill Road overpass and planning is continuing for the remaining section of Veloway 1 through Holland Park and Stones Corner.
