NT Government shortlists three developers for Berrimah Farm development

AFTER receiving eight expressions of interest from local and international firms to develop approximately 168 hectares of the Berrimah Farm site in Darwin's east, the Northern Territory Government this week announced it has shortlisted three companies for the project.

It is estimated that the site, which is predominantly vacant Crown land and bounded by Stuart Highway to the north and Tiger Brennan Drive to the south, could potentially accommodate as many as 3,000 dwellings for a population 6,750.

The shortlisted proponents competing for the development rights are:

  • Gwelo Developments (previous work: SOHO apartments and Mantra Pandanas);
  • Halikos Group (previous work: One30 Esplanade and the H hotel); and
  • Urbex (previous work: Johnston Ridge and Zuccoli Stage 1 residential subdivisions).

Lands and Planning Minister Peter Chandler said these developers now have the chance to make their mark on Darwin's future by creating an urban centre that will be the "envy of the nation."

"This will be a community that not only supports its planned 6750 residents but also attracts visitors from surrounding suburbs by creating spaces and places people want to be in," the Minister said, adding that restaurants, bars, supermarkets, schools and speciality shops are all possibilities.

"These developers have quite the task ahead of them, but I believe they have the experience and knowledge to deliver quality proposals that will make for a tough decision."

Last year, the NT Government released a draft area plan to guide the future development of the site, which identified a range of land uses and varying residential densities.

The Expressions of Interest process opened in October and closed on 5 December 2014. A Request for Detailed Proposal process will commence in February 2015 with a preferred proponent expected to be identified by mid-2015.
