NORTHERN Territory Lands, Planning and Environment Minister, Peter Chandler, this week announced a Request for Proposals to develop the first stage of a housing subdivision in Katherine East, approximately 270 kilometres south-east of Darwin.
The 19-hectare Katherine East Stage 1 site is expected to deliver more than 100 new lots. It forms part of a 52-hectare site identified by the government for development that could potentially create land for between 400 to 500 new dwellings.
"The Territory Government is accelerating land release to increase the supply of homes. This 19-hectare development will deliver at least 100 new lots," Mr Chandler said.
"Katherine is an important part of the Territory's economic future, and the Country Liberals Government is ensuring there is enough land available for new housing and commercial opportunities."
According to the government, Katherine has a population of approximately 10,000 people and is the main service centre for another 14,000 people in communities stretching west to the West Australian border and east to the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Growth in the region is expected as economic and job opportunities arise from a number of projects in the region, including construction of a gas pipeline from Katherine to Gove and new mining projects.
Member for Katherine, Willem Westra Van Holthe, said significant projects in the region, such as the Vista Gold Mount Todd project and the Katherine to Gove gas pipeline, add pressure to the demand for housing.
"I promised during the election campaign that a Country Liberals Government would act quickly to identify and release residential land, this release of land represents the fulfilment of that commitment," Mr Westra van Holthe said.
The successful developer is expected to be announced in October, with work due to begin early next year.
