THE preferred tenderer for the Canberra Brickworks has proposed an exciting long-term solution for this unique heritage precinct which will open up the site to the Canberra community, according to Urban Renewal Minister Mick Gentleman.
Mr Gentleman last week announced that local Canberra developer Doma Group has been selected as the preferred tenderer for the Canberra Brickworks development, with a proposal for a 'garden city' that meets the requirements of 380 residential dwellings in a mix of stand-alone houses, terraces, and apartments.
"The Brickworks played a very important role in the development of Canberra and the government is committed to ensuring that this new development preserves its heritage for future generations," Mr Gentleman said.
"I am very pleased to see that the heritage of the Brickworks has been respected and that the site is to be used in a way that encourages more Canberrans to enjoy the area.
"The land sale process for the Brickworks has had extensive community input through a community panel engagement model that included access to the short-listed proponents and their proposals.
"The community panel helped create precinct objectives that set out community expectations for the new development and also assisted in reviewing how the short-listed proposals responded to those objectives.
"The panel met with the short-listed proponents during the tender process, and the Government is keen for the panel to have further involvement with the successful tenderer as the development progresses," Mr Gentleman concluded.
The Land Development Agency will now undertake contractual negotiations to agree principles for project delivery of Doma Group's tender and ongoing community engagement prior to future statutory planning submissions.
Further detail will be available after contract negotiations are successfully concluded. More information is available from the Land Development Agency website at <http://www.lda.act.gov.au/canberrabrickworks/>.
