Detailed design work to begin on ACT's Majura Parkway

THE Australian and ACT Governments today announced that SMEC Australia has been selected to undertake and complete the detailed design work on the new Majura Parkway.

Construction of the Majura Parkway project, which was announced earlier this year, is expected to commence towards the end of 2012.  The tender process for the design work was announced in September.

ACT Government allocates $9m for walking and cycling projects

THE ACT Government will inject $9 million of funds over three years into seven new walking and cycling infrastructure projects, Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Simon Corbell, announced this week.

The projects were identified in a review investigating ways to improve the ACT's walking and cycling networks between town and employment centres.

Government endorses ACT's Molonglo Valley plan

THE Australian and ACT Governments have agreed on a plan that aims to provide certainty for the future of the Molonglo Valley and opens the way for the development of new suburbs in the area.

Federal Environment Minister, Tony Burke, joined ACT Environment and Sustainable Development Minister, Simon Corbell, last Friday to announce the Commonwealth Government's endorsement of the ACT's Molonglo Valley Plan for the Protection of Matters of National Environmental Significance.

Review of National Capital Authority released

REGIONAL Australia Minister Simon Crean this week released a report following an independent review investigating the role and responsibilities of the National Capital Authority (NCA).

The review of the NCA, completed by Dr Allan Hawke, examines the Federal Government's responsibilities in the national capital and considers reforms to planning, the NCA's sustainability and future administrative arrangements.

Draft Transport for Canberra policy released

A DRAFT transport policy for Canberra aims to provide a more effective and efficient transport system that meets the needs of the community while reducing the environmental and social impacts of transport.

The draft policy, Transport for Canberra, was released for public comment last week by Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell.

Design work for ACT's Majura Parkway up for tender

DESIGN work for the largest single road infrastructure investment in the ACT, the Majura Parkway, was put up for tender earlier this month.

Companies interested in carrying out the detailed design work for the Majura Parkway have until 13 October to submit their bid under the tender process being conducted by the ACT Government.

ACT Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher, last week launched the Regional Development Australia (RDA) ACT Regional Strategic Plan.

The ACT Strategic Regional Plan 2011-12 aims to provide a strategic planning perspective for the ACT in its three contexts of Canberra as a city of people, as the nation's capital, and the hub of the south-east NSW region.

Draft master plan for Kambah Village released

THE ACT Government has released a draft master plan that aims to guide the development and redevelopment of Kambah group centre over the next 20 to 30 years.

The draft master plan is being released for public feedback before it is presented to government for endorsement towards the end of 2011.

ACTPLA approves Dickson residential development

A DEVELOPMENT application to consolidate two blocks and construct a 10 unit residential complex has been given conditional approval by the ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA).

Acting Chief Planning Executive, David Papps, said the application, at Marsden Street, Dickson, was approved because it meets the requirements of the Multi Unit Housing Development Code and was consistent with the Territory Plan and the Planning and Development Act 2007.

Australian Government commits $144m for ACT's Majura Parkway

INFRASTRUCTURE and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese today announced the Australian Government will provide $144 million towards the cost of the Majura Parkway, matching the ACT Government's contribution dollar-for-dollar.

The Majura Parkway project will create an 11.5 kilometre long duplicated road with seven bridges and three interchanges at the intersections with Fairbairn Avenue, Federal Highway and Monaro Highway.

New master plan released for Kingston Centre

ACT Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development yesterday announced a new government master plan to revitalise the Kingston Centre, with a vision for expanded retail, residential and commercial development.

"The Kingston Centre is already a very popular shopping and eating spot in Canberra, but this master plan will bring new life to the area and ensure it continues to attract Canberrans to enjoy the public space," Mr Corbell said.

Aged care facility refused at Red Hill in ACT

THE ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA) last week refused a development application for the redevelopment of the Morling Lodge aged care facility at Red Hill.

ACTPLA's Chief Planning Executive, Neil Savery, said the application by Baptist Community Services for 5 two storey buildings, containing 114 independent living units, was inconsistent with the Territory Plan.
