ACT Government approves Royalla Solar Farm

AUSTRALIA'S largest solar farm is set to go ahead, following a decision by ACT Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Simon Corbell to approve the proposal to construct a 20 megawatt solar farm on land adjacent to the Monaro Highway.

Mr Corbell used his call-in powers under the Planning and Development Act 2007 to approve the Royalla Solar Farm proposal because he said it responded to a major policy issue and will deliver a substantial public benefit.

Plans for Canberra's Capital Metro light rail system on track: Minister

WORK to establish light rail in Canberra and transform the city's public transport network is on track, Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Simon Corbell announced last week.

"The recruitment process for the critical role of Project Director to lead the new Capital Metro Agency, and for a Project Board Chair, will commence in the coming weeks," Mr Corbell said.

ACT Government introduces Bill to amend Heritage Act 2004

NEW heritage legislation introduced last week by the ACT Government will help to ensure the balance of conservation is maintained whilst meeting the needs of a growing city, according to Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Simon Corbell.

The Heritage Legislation Amendment Bill 2013 aims to create a more simplified, open and transparent process for registering and protecting the ACT's heritage places and objects and follows a review of the Heritage Act 2004 in 2010, which was required under the provisions of the Act.

Second phase of ACT's Solar Auction receives 15 proposals

THE ACT Government last week said that it has received strong industry response for the second phase of its Solar Auction project, with 15 proposals received from Australian and international companies for large-scale solar generation facilities.

Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Simon Corbell said the second phase will award 20 megawatts of renewable energy for the Territory, in addition to the 20 megawatts awarded in 2012.

ACT Government launches two projects to transform Canberra

TWO projects with the potential to transform the city centre and guide the future development of Canberra, 'The City Plan' and 'City to the Lake', were last week unveiled by ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.

The Chief Minister said The City Plan will guide decision-making and provide a blueprint for future infrastructure development, land release and incentives for redevelopment across Canberra while the City to Lake project will extend the city towards Lake Burley Griffin.

Construction on Majura Parkway commences

FEDERAL Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese last week joined ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher to announce that major construction on Canberra's largest ever road project – the $288 million Majura Parkway – is now underway.

Mr Albanese said the project, which has been assessed and recommended by Infrastructure Australia, is expected to generate long term economic, social and environmental benefits worth almost $1 billion.

ACT Government releases updated strategy to achieve greenhouse gas reductions

THE ACT Government last month released the ACT Climate Change Strategy: AP2, which maps out the pathway to achieve the government's legislated greenhouse gas reduction targets in 2020 and to become a sustainable and carbon neutral community.

Released by Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development Simon Corbell, large-scale energy deployment is at the centre of the new climate change action plan that aims to see 90 per cent of the ACT's power sourced from renewable energy alternatives by 2020.

ACT Government releases final Tuggeranong town centre master plan

THE Tuggeranong town centre will see an extra 7,800 housing dwellings, the transformation of major streets and improvements to pedestrian access around the centre, according to Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Simon Corbell.

Mr Corbell last week released the final Tuggeranong town centre master plan that aims to make Tuggeranong a unique place to live and work, boost residential development and enhance the gateway to the mountains and the Murrumbidgee River.

Spanish company to build Australia's largest solar farm in the ACT

AUSTRALIA'S largest photovoltaic (PV) solar farm will be built in Canberra by Spanish renewable energy company Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Simon Corbell announced earlier this month.

FRV will build the solar farm on 50 hectares near Royalla, 23 kilometres south of Canberra CBD, after it won the ACT Government's reverse auction for a 20-year Feed in Tariff entitlement.

ACT awards construction contract for $288m Majura Parkway project

FEDERAL Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese this month announced that the construction contract for the $288 million Majura Parkway project has been awarded to Fulton Hogan, with work on the project to commence soon.

Tenders for the construction of Majura Parkway were called on 26 May 2012 and closed 31 July 2012 and seven companies made submissions to undertake the work.

ACT Planning Strategy released

ACT Environment and Sustainable Development Simon Corbell has released the final ACT Planning Strategy, which outlines Canberra's strategic planning direction for the next two decades.

According to Mr Corbell, the government will focus on more development in and around group and town centres to ensure that more Canberrans can live close to transport corridors and their places of work.

Real time passenger information system to arrive in Canberra next year

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Katy Gallagher, this month announced that Trapeze Austrics Pty Ltd has been selected as the preferred supplier to design, supply and install ACTION's real time passenger information system.

The new system, which will be known as 'NXTBUS', will track ACTION buses and provide instant information to passengers in relation to their current location and their estimated arrival time at the next stop.

ACT Government seeks feedback on environment protection

THE ACT Government has called for feedback on a new discussion paper that seeks to improve the way work is undertaken to protect the local environment, including water ways, grasslands and woodlands.

Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Simon Corbell released the discussion paper last week, which is part of the review into the Environment Protection Act 1997.
